Shri Kamala Nehru was born on 1st August 1899, into a Kashmiri Pandit family. They were blessed with a daughter Indira Priyadarshini (who later went on to become the Prime Minister of India).

Kamla Nehru entered into the freedom struggle through the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1921. The lady who once was known to be a shy person emerged as a strong woman who broke all the stereotypes by joining her husband in the Independence movement. Kamla Nehru and all other lady pioneers launched a huge protest against the shops in Allahabad, selling alcohol and foreign fabric. It is said that Kamla Nehru encouraged Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to change his way of life because she got influenced by Gandhi’s concept. Along with other lady pioneers, she launched a massive protest against the shops selling foreign fabric and alcohol in Allahabad. Similarly, following Gandhi’s path, she got involved to protest the British’s monopoly on salt i.e. the ‘Civil Disobedience Movement. Kamla Nehru was believed as one of the first leaders who sold interdict salts during salt Satyagraha. She continued her struggle for freedom even when her husband (Jawaharlal Nehru) was in jail for months. She set up a dispensary for injured fighters at the Nehru mansion or the ‘Swaraj Bhawan’. Along with her other women volunteers, she also organized no-tax campaigns. After battling with tuberculosis Smt Kamala Nehru died on 8th February 1936, Switzerland, and left many stories of her determination and bravery which we can never forget. While the great majority of people know about the men who actively took part in the Independence movement, we forget the female pioneers who fought passionately to throw out the Britishers from India.
