Bina Das was born on 24 August 1911, Krishnanagar as the daughter of well-known revolutionary Benimadhav Das and social worker, Sarala Das. The innumerable stories of the British atrocities that she had heard since her childhood had triggered her revolutionary fervor to throw out the British from India. She was one of the followers of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose who was also her father’s friend.
Bina along with her sister Kalyani Das joined as members of a semi-revolutionary organization for women namely Chhatri Sangha, in Kolkata which later became a platform for them to participate in various social awareness and welfare activities. With time, her will to fight the British became stronger and she was waiting for a chance to implement her plan. Finally on the 6th of February, 1932 she got that opportunity. It was the annual convocation of Calcutta University, students were filled with joy and were heading towards the hall to receive their degrees. While the rest of the students were excited and were happily waiting to receive their degrees, Bina Das had her own plans. As Stanley Jackson, the Chancellor of the University who was also the Governor of Bengal started addressing the students, Bina pulled out her revolver and 5 gunshots were fired towards him. However, the bullets missed the target, and Bina was overpowered and was sentenced to nine years of imprisonment at the young age of 21. After the arrest, Bina was subjected to a lot of harsh interrogations but she never revealed the names of her co-revolutionaries. After completing her sentence, Bina came out of prison in 1939. It is said that the years of imprisonment left wounds on her body, but not on her spirit. She again actively participated in the Quit India Movement and was again arrested for her involvement. She had a fiery nature and people even called her Agnikanya. She kept fighting till Independence. Swami Vivekanand Subharti University remembers the courageous freedom fighter Smt. Bina Das from Bengal.
