Shri Rajendra Lahiri was born on 23rd June 1901, in village Mohanpur, District Pabna, Bengal Presidency (presently Bangladesh). He pursued his MA from Banaras. Lahiri joined in the revolutionary activities against the British when he was a student. He participated in the Dakshineswar Bombing and escaped. In Banaras, he joined the Hindustan Republican Association or HRA (a revolutionary organization established by Bhagat Singh, Chandrasekhar Azad, and others) with his friends. On 9 August 1925, he participated in the Kakori Conspiracy, which was a train robbery between Kakori near Lucknow. It was planned to loot the British government’s money at the expense of revolutionary activities. This came to be known as a murder case as a passenger in the train was accidentally shot and died. 40 people were arrested in connection with the Kakori Conspiracy. Lahiri was arrested because of his interrelation with the Dakshineswar bombing and sentenced to strict imprisonment for 10 years. The investigation was done in which he was found guilty and was sentenced to death after a long trial. Along with him, the other three who were sentenced to death were Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqullah Khan, and Thakur Roshan Singh. The name of three of them is remembered by every Indian because they were hanged on the scheduled date i.e. 19th December 1927. However, the fourth martyr, Rajendranath Lahiri, largely remains forgotten as he was hanged two days before the decided date i.e. on 17th December 1927, in the Gonda District Jail (UP). Swami Vivekanand Subharti University on his birth anniversary remembers one of the most well-read socialist literature among the revolutionaries of his times.
