Shri. Abdul Hamid was born on 1st July, 1993 in Dhamupur village,UP. Hamid was just 20 when he was recruited into the Army in Varanasi. He got trained at the Grenadiers Regimental Centre at Nasirabad, after which he was posted to the 4 Grenadiers regiment (1955).Havildar Hamid fought the war in Thang La pass (1962), as a part of the 7 Mountain Brigade, 4 Mountain Division. Following the agreement, Hamid along with his troop moved to Ambala, where he was posted as Company Quarter-Master Havildar (CQMH) to an administration company. On 10th September 1965, a Pakistan regiment launched an attack near Cheema village at a strategic location in the KhemKaran sector. CQMH Abdul Hamid, took an advantageous position and knocked out the leading enemy tank and then, quickly changing his position, sent another tank up in fire. One by one, Abdul Hamid destroyed six Pakistani tanks but unfortunately was killed while targeting a seventh tank. Abdul Hameed died at the age of 32 years, and was honoured with India’s highest gallantry award, Param Vir Chakra.
