Dr. Atma Ram who was an Indian scientist was born on 12th October 1908, in the Pilana village of Bijnor district of Uttar Pradesh. He did his graduation from Kanpur and then completed his master’s & Ph.D. from Allahbad. The Atmaram Award is given by the Central Institute of Hindi in his memory. Central Institute of Hindi is an autonomous institute run by the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India. He served as the Director of Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute and got the post of Director General of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research on 21st August 1966. He also served as the Principal Advisor to Prime Minister and Union Cabinet on Science and Technology from 1977-1983. In 1959, the Government of India honored him with the fourth highest Indian civilian award “The Padma Shri”, for his contributions. He had been honoured by several awards such as the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award (1959), Plaque of Honour, All India Glass Manufacturers Federation (1964). Unfortunately, he passed away on 6th February 1983.
