Dr. Pandurang Vaman Kane

Dr. Pandurang Vaman Kane was born on 7th May 1880, in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. He was born in a very conservative Chitpavan Brahmin family. Dr. Kane did his graduation from the University of Mumbai and there he worked as a Historian and the Vice-Chancellor of the University. He also helped in setting up the Kurukshetra University.

In 1930, Dr. Kane’s ‘History of Dharmasastra’, was published, which was one of his best-known works. Dr. Radhakrishnan announced the launch of this book which has been an outstanding milestone in Indian history. The book was a true combination of formulation and implementation and has several texts, manuscripts, and nearly 6500 pages of information, compiled in one. It is also known to contain certain information in Sanskrit such as the Puranas, Kautilya, and Mahabharat. Dr. Kane mentioned that his basic idea behind writing the book was to make the Public Aware of the ancient social laws and customs of India.

The book ‘Vyavaharamayukha’ was his next work as an author in which the history of Dharmasastra was covered in the introductory paragraph. This became one of his major works and was translated into several other languages such as English and Marathi, other than Sanskrit. The book was made up of nearly 15000 pages.

Dr. Kane spent the rest of his career debating the Indian constitution. Due to the nature of his work and writings, many issues were brought to light. His name is always prefixed with an MM as was the Mahamahopadhyaya for his excellence in writings. Dr. Kane was also an honorary member of the Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan and there he achieved new heights of greatness. Last but not the least, he was honoured with the highest civilian accolade, the Bharat Ratna, in 1963.

He is said to have passed away in the year 1972 when he was 92 years old. However, the exact cause and date of Dr. Kane’s death remain unknown.
