Rashtriya Pathik

Shri Vijay Singh Pathik was born in 1882 in Guthawali village, Bulandshahar to Hamir Singh and Kamal Kunwari in a Gurjar family. His father Hamir Singh took an active part in the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 and got arrested many times. His birth name was Bhup Singh, but later he changed it to “Vijay Singh Pathik” after being involved in the Lahore Conspiracy Case in 1915. Since his teenage, he took an active part in revolutionary activities during the British rule in India. Pathik ji’s non-cooperation movement was so successful that Shri Lokmanya Tilak wrote a letter to Maharana Fateh Singh to meet the demand of the Bijoliya agitators. Mahadev Desai secretary of Shri Mahatma Gandhi was sent to study the movement.

It was Pathik ji who fought for the cause of united Rajasthan and had taken up the issue to Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel. He was imprisoned for having conducted the Kisan agitation in Bijoliya and was kept at special jail which was created in the Tehsil building, Todgarh. The Mahila Mandal, Kisan Panchayat, and Yuvak Mandal invited Pathik to come and guide them. Women of Mewar started getting respect from their men. Pathik made people feel that women’s and men’s equality is necessary to develop a prosperous society. Pathik was also a great patriot besides being a freedom fighter. He would prefer to end his life rather than bow down the flag.

He also wrote the flag song which became very popular during that period.
Being a Revolutionary and Satyagrahi, he was also a very well-known Hindi poet, writer, and journalist. He was also the editor of Rajasthan Kesari and Naveen Rajasthan and started his own independent Hindi weekly, the Rajasthan Sandesh and the Nav Sandesh from Ajmer.
He conveyed his views through Tarun Rajasthan (a Hindi weekly).
He was popularly known as Rashtriya Pathik. As a writer also he made an impact through some of his well-known books and novels namely “Ajay Meru”, Pathik Pramod, Pathikji ke Jail ke Patra, Pathik ki Kavitaon Ka Sangrah, etc. Pathik Ji was also appointed as the President of the Rajputana and Madhya Bharat Provincial Congress. The Government of India also issued a postage stamp in his honour. Pathik ji died in Ajmer in 1954, when Rajasthan state was formed.
