Shri. Govind Vallabh Pant was born on 10th September 1887 in Almora. Govind was brought up by Shri. Badri Dutt Joshi (his grandfather), who played a significant part in framing his political point of view. In 1914, Pant began his active work against the British Raj as a lawyer, when he helped a local Parishad/village council of Kashipur, in opposing the law of requiring locals to provide free transportation of the luggage of traveling British officials, and was successful. He entered politics in 1921, and was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh. During 1930, he was arrested and imprisoned for organizing a Salt March (inspired by Gandhi Ji’s earlier actions). In 1933, he was again arrested and imprisoned (this time for seven months) for attending a session of the then-banned provincial Congress. In 1935, the ban was withdrawn, and Pant joined the new Legislative Council. D Pant acted as the tiebreaker between Gandhi’s faction during the Second World War, which advocated favouring the British during the war.Congress in 1934, ended its boycott for the legislatures and raised candidates. Pant was elected to the Central Legislative Assembly. His political skills won the appreciation of the party leaders, and he became the Deputy leader in the Assembly. In 1940, Pant was arrested and imprisoned for helping to organize the Satyagraha movement. Pant was arrested again in 1942, and this time for signing the Quit India resolution. He spent three years in Ahmednagar Fort along with other members of the Congress working committee (until March 1945), at that point Shri. Jawaharlal Nehru requested for Pant’s release, because of his failing health. The new British Labour government ordered new elections to the Provincial legislatures in 1945  Congress won with a majority in the 1946 elections in the United Provinces and Pant was again made the Chief Minister, and continued even after India’s independence (1947). He was honoured with Bharat Ratna for his work. Swami Vivekanand Subharti University remembers Pandit Govind Vallabh Pant who was a statesman of India, an Indian independence activist, and one of the foremost political leaders from Uttarakhand (then United Provinces). He also established ‘Hindi’ as the national language of India.
